What is LoRaWAN asset tracking?

LoRaWAN asset tracking uses a long-range, low-power wireless network to report the location and status of tagged assets across wide areas. LoRaWAN, short for Long Range Wide Area Network, trades the pinpoint precision and high bandwidth of technologies like GPS or cellular for something more valuable in many settings: range measured in kilometers and battery life measured in years.

How LoRaWAN asset tracking works

A LoRaWAN system has three parts:

  • Trackers (tags): small, battery-powered devices on your assets that transmit periodic location and sensor data.
  • Gateways: receivers that pick up signals from many trackers across a wide area and forward them to the network.
  • Network and application server: software that turns the data into live location and status you can act on.

Location can come from GPS on the tracker, from the network itself, or from a hybrid, depending on how much precision and battery life you need.

Why LoRaWAN for asset tracking

  • Range: a single gateway can cover a large site or several kilometers, so you need very little infrastructure.
  • Battery life: low-power design lets trackers run for years, which matters when you have thousands of them.
